
Upside Down Onion Tarts
Enjoy each delicious bite of these homemade Upside Down Onion Tarts, where golden puff pastry hugs caramelized onions, with a hint of balsamic glaze, and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. Ingredients
- 1 red onion thickly sliced into rounds
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Balsamic glaze
- Salt Flaked Sea if possible
- Fresh basil leaves or Basil Paste
- 1 sheet puff pastry defrosted in the fridge
- 1 egg (beaten for egg wash)
- Grated Parmesan cheese for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°5 (180°C).
- Line a large baking tray with baking parchment.
- Slice the onion thinly into rounds.
- Place 2 teaspoons of olive oil on 6 spots on the baking tray where you will lay the tarts.
- Drizzle a teaspoon of balsamic glaze on top of the oil, then sprinkle generously with salt.
- Divide the onion slices between the 6 places.
- Add a basil leaf to each onion round (or a dab of basil paste).
- Cut the pastry sheet into 6 pieces and place one piece of pastry on top of each onion.
- Press down around the edges with the back of a fork.
- Brush with egg wash and bake for 20 minutes or until the dome of the pastry is golden and matches the edges.
- Remove from the oven and cool on the tray for 1 minute.
- Using a spatula, gently flip the tart over.
- Sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.
- Serve the upside down onion tarts warm as a delicious appetizer, snack or alongside a fresh salad or soup.
